AFC South: Week Seven Recap
It was a big day for big receivers and the two games played today in AFC South were no exception. Kenny Britt, Mike Sims-Walker, and Dwayne Bowe all played well for their teams and made big-time contributions. Sims-Walker may not have the stat lines that Britt and Bowe came away with, but two key pass interference calls on passes thrown his way put the Jaguars in first and goal situations. It was a slow day for star running backs within the division as both Chris Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew were unable to aid their teams in establishing the rushing attack.
Tennessee 37 – Philadelphia 19:
For those of you unable to tune in to this one, do not let the score mislead you, the game was very closely contested prior to a Titans rally in the fourth quarter. Kerry Collins struggled early with three turnovers yet was able to overcome his mistakes and lead the Titans to victory by way of 27 fourth quarter points and a huge game from WR Kenny Britt. The Eagles controlled the game early on taking a 13-7 lead into the third quarter, even extending their lead to 19-10 before Collins woke up and Kevin Kolb collapsed under the pressure. Collins finished his day with 276 yards and three turnovers, losing one fumble and throwing two interceptions on 17 of 31 passing. Collins found Britt for 7 receptions for 225 yards and all three of his touchdowns on the day.
Star running back Chris Johnson had trouble getting anything going, finishing with 66 yards on 24 attempts and zero scores. Johnson was unable to find a spot in the passing game either, finishing with two receptions for seven yards. He had enough carries to force the defense to play up, leaving Britt often in single or even broken coverage as the Eagles tried to blitz Collins and force him to beat them with his arm.
Eagles QB Kevin Kolb appeared to have the Titans defense figured out as he and Riley Cooper routinely beat the secondary for big gains, including a 37 yard completion that Chris Hope nearly turned into an interception. With under a minute remaining Kolb threw into coverage with the game already decided, and the Titans Cortland Finnegan intercepted the pass and returned it for a touchdown. Kolb was forced to try and spread the ball around as star receiver DeSean Jackson was out recovering from a concussion and Jeremy Maclin rarely found open space deep into the Titans secondary where the Eagles are used to attacking. Kolb finished with 231 yards and one touchdown and two interceptions on 26 of 48 passing. Kolb was under constant pressure and showed enough mobility to avoid the rush or even throw on the run which is how he and Cooper connected for the Eagles lone score of the day on offense.
David Akers was perfect on the day and seemed to be kicking the Eagles to victory after his last field goal put the Eagles up 19-10 in the 4th quarter. Following Akers last field goal, Collins found Britt for an 80-yard score that sparked an offense that had been mostly ineffective for most of the game. Collins then lead the Titans on three more scoring drives that put them ahead 30-19 with under a minute remaining. Titans kicker Rob Bironas also was perfect on the day, going three for three on field goal attempts.
The Titans are now 5-2 and in sole possession of first place in the South while the Eagles fall to 4-3 and in second place in the NFC East.
Kansas City 42 – Jacksonville 20:
Todd Bouman performed admirably and showed his affinity for hyphens as he completed touchdown passes to Maurice Jones-Drew and Mike Sims-Walker, going toe to toe with the Chiefs for three quarters. The Chiefs running game proved to be too much however, as did their defense as the Jaguars were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Bouman lobbed a pass to Maurice Jones-Drew in the face of a blitz in the second quarter that resulted in an 18-yard touchdown. Bouman had two big penalties go his way when passes thrown up for grabs down the sideline resulted in pass-interference calls against the Chiefs. Both plays led to Jacksonville scores. Down 21-20 in the third, Bouman once again completed a touchdown pass under pressure, this time to Derrick Johnson for 15 yards. The unfortunate part here is that Johnson plays for the Chiefs, which gave Kansas City a 28-20 lead. That was the closest the Jaguars would get for the remainder of the contest.
Bouman finished with 222 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions on 18 of 34 passing, as Bouman was forced to make plays with his arm as the running game struggled. Maurice Jones-Drew finished with 47 yards on 16 attempts and his lone score coming through the air in the second quarter. He caught five passes for 74 yards eclipsing the century mark on the day in total yards.
Sims-Walker finished with three catches for 38 yards and one score. Two of his biggest plays will not appear in the stat column as they were not catches but pass-interference penalties against the defense that set the Jags up near the goal line.
The Chiefs running attack entered the game as the league’s best, and certainly did nothing to derail that trend. Thomas Jones led the way with 125 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown, and Jamaal Charles added 71 yards on 15 attempts and a touchdown of his own. Dexter McCluster and Jackie Battle also got into the action, contributing 40 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown for Battle with the game already decided.
Cassel was the perfect compliment to the running game, rarely forcing the ball and doing a great job of game managing with a high completion percentage and zero turnovers. Cassel and Dwayne Bowe connected for two touchdowns as Cassel finished with 193 yards and two scores on 13 of 18 passing. Bowe weaved through the Jaguars secondary on an impressive 53 yard highlight reel score that seems to be becoming a regularity for him. Bowe finished with three catches for 81 yards and two scores. Had Bowe not dropped a catch in the end zone against the Colts, he and Cassel would now have three straight games with a touchdown.
